How Tuition Exchange Works

The Tuition Exchange Process

The Tuition Exchange Process

The Basics: 3 Exchanges, 1 Application

The Tuition Exchange (TE) is network of over 710 colleges and universities, located in 50 states/U.S. territories and nine international countries, that offer a reciprocal scholarship opportunity for eligible faculty and staff dependents at member schools. TE Scholarships, which are minimally full tuition or the TE set rate amount, are available to eligible employees and qualifying dependents at TE member schools. The employee’s school defines what constitutes an eligible employee and what constitutes an eligible dependent.

CIC-TEP is a network of Council of Independent College member institutions who accept full-time employees, their spouses, and their dependents as students, tuition-free. Learn more about how the CIC-TEP (Council for Independent College’s) Tuition Exchange Program works.

FACHEX (Faculty, Administrator and Staff Children Exchange Program) is an undergraduate exchange program that allows dependents of eligible faculty and staff employed at 26 Catholic, Jesuit institutions to apply for a full tuition FACHEX Scholarship. Learn more about how the FACHEX Program works.

*Note: Beginning with the 2027-2028 award year, students will submit one TE EZ-Application to be considered for tuition exchange scholarships in any of the above exchanges in which the employee’s Export school participates. Learn more about How to Apply.

Things to Know

  • Each school participating in The Tuition Exchange (TE), CIC-TEP, and FACHEX has a Tuition Exchange Liaison Officer (TELO). TELOs are responsible for reviewing qualified tuition exchange applications and helping you throughout the process. You can find the one for your school from our School List.
  • The eligible faculty/staff member’s employer is considered the Export school. This means your student is an Export student, and the TELO at your home school is the Export TELO.
  • The school that offers a tuition exchange scholarship to the student is the Import school. This means the TELO at the school your student is interested in attending, is the Import TELO.
  • Tuition Exchange Scholarships are not guaranteed and selectivity varies by school.
  • The value of the Tuition Exchange (TE) scholarship is typically full tuition or the annual TE set rate. For the 2026-27 academic year, the set rate is $44,000. Search on a particular school to find their TE scholarship maximum. FACHEX and CIC-TEP scholarships are full tuition.
  • Tuition exchange cholarships may include or be offset by any federal grants, state grants, institutional scholarships/grants or outside scholarships the student is awarded.
